Brazil has become the second country in the United States to be infected with one million coronaviruses - a record 554,000 new infection a day
Brazil has passed one million through nearly 1,400,000 positive tests. Infections rose to a record 54,000 in a 24-hour period yesterday. It comes two months after the United States became the first country to reach one million. Brazil has recorded more than a thousand deaths for the fourth day in a row.
With 54,000 infections a day, Brazil has become the second country in the world to be infected with one million coronaviruses.
The South American country recorded a total of more than 1,200 deaths per day for the fourth consecutive day bringing about 49,000 total.
Carissa Etienne, director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), says Brazil is a big concern.
In a country with a population of 209 million, the lack of testing suggests that the actual number could be even higher.
Hours before the latest figures were released, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Gherbayass warned that the coronavirus epidemic was entering a "new and dangerous" phase.
